Als ein Jahr nach Vincent van Gogh’s Tod ein Brief von ihm an seinen Bruder auftaucht, macht sich Armand Roulin (Douglas Booth) zunächst widerwillig auf den Weg, den Brief zu übergeben. Doch dann gerät er immer tiefer in die Geschehnisse rund um den vermeintlichen Selbstmord des Künstlers hinein und beginnt, dem verkannten Genie und seinem Tod genauer nachzugehen.

One year after Vincent van Gogh’s death, a letter from him to his brother appears. First not really amused about the job, the young Armand Roulin (Douglas Booth) starts his journey to find the rightful owner of the letter. But then he gets sucked into the events around the assumed suicide of the artist and starts to investigate the death of the misjudged artist.
Der Film besticht nicht nur durch seine interessante Handlung, die einem einen ganz neuen Blick auf Vincent van Gogh ermöglicht, sondern auch und vor allem durch seine besondere Machart. Loving Vincent gilt als der erste Animationsfilm, der komplett in Öl gemalt ist und das von mehr als hundert Künstlern. Dadurch wird eine einzigartige Atmosphäre erschaffen, die Bilder des Künstlers erwachen zum Leben und man taucht in seine Welt ein, wie nie zuvor. Ein wunderschönes, berührendes und einzigartiges Schauerlebnis, in dem man immer wieder den Atem anhält, um dieses buchstäblich bewegende Kunstwerk zu bestaunen.
Wer hiernach nicht sofort ins van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam gehen will, der hat es nicht verstanden.

This movie doesn’t only win you over with its interesting plot, that makes you look at Vincent van Gogh from a completely new angle, but also with its so very special making.
Loving Vincent apparently is the first animated movie that is completely oil-painted by more than a hundred artists. The fact that it’s basically a huge, moving oil painting, creates a unique atmosphere, that lets the artists’s paintings come to life in front of your eyes and makes you dive deep into his world like never before. A truly beautiful, touching and special experience that makes you hold your breath, because you are so in awe with this literal moving piece of art.
If you do not want to go to Amsterdam and visit the van Gogh museum after watching this, you didn’t get it.
